British Council Interview

The "questions" went something along these lines:

-->
Describe an activity you set up carefully and how it worked.
Describe a pronunciation activity you do for an area students have trouble with and how it is successful.
Describe how you adapt a lesson to a particular class.
Describe how you make sure to involve all students in a class.
Describe a successful class you used technology in.
Describe how you ensured all customers were kept informed.
Describe how you changed your view or approach as a result of other`s input.
Give an example of you assisting other members of the team.

I would have to say that I don`t think it went as well as it could if I had had the questions in advance...

Hey. I found your blog when searching for BC interview. Which job where you going for (and where?). Did you get it? I have an interview in a few weeks. I'm nervous, I really can't do interviews. Thanks.

Hi, thanks for the comment. I was going for a teaching post in Latin America but I didn´t get the job. I think I failed to give satisfactory examples for some of the questions. Best of luck.

Thanks so much for posting these questions. I've just finished my telephone interview and would have failed miserably if I hadn't had your heads up beforehand. As it was, I still waffled...nerves...but at least i had some specific examples to hand! Cheers.

You're welcome Lou. Glad they were of use. This is by far the most viewed part of my blog and yours is the first real thanks I've had. I'll keep my fingers crossed that your examples trumped your waffle.

Wish i'd seen this before my interview that i had yesterday. Some of the questions really threw me and it was a bit of a disaster!
Lou...were were you interviewing for?

Thanks for your help. Anyone else have any tips?

Having the interview with the BC tomorrow by phone. Feel worried. Will post the questions asked after the interview. Maybe be they become useful for somebody.

Good luck. I'm sure your post will be appreciated.

Hi there. just had the interview today. So here the questions..
Why are you relevant for this job?
What will be the most challenging for you in this post?
Describe a successful lesson you recently taught.
What do you do to ensure child protection and safety?
Tell us about your recent experience of working together. What was your role? What was the most challenging? What have you learnt?
Do you want to tell us something that you wanted to say but we didn't ask you?
That's it...All the questions were quite expected for me. We'll see how it went. Will post you my results next week when they let me know.
Hope, my post will help somebody. Good luck!

Thanks Kate, I wish you all the best. Can I ask whether the questions you posted were in addition to the ones I posted or instead of them?

Kate said...

Instead of them. These are all questions asked. not any other. I actually was surprised, expected more detailed questions on each teaching skill and behaviour.

Hi

I got interviewed at BC last week which went pretty well. Unfortunately I have received no reply till date. Does this means I am rejected or do they have any formal process of mailing to rejected candidates?

Watford Boy said...

Hi Gaguuuu, I think it took a few days but I was certainly informed. Good luck in finding something.

It's high time I left thanks for your page, Watford Boy. I used it three years ago and successfully got my first BC job. I've just used it again and successfully got my second BC job. I've also shared it with three friends who between them have successfully landed five different BC posts over the last three years, so in total your sharing has got four people seven BC jobs! Many, many thanks.

Thanks for the thanks, Pieces of Eight, really glad that this entry has been such a help. Were there any other tips you could leave for others taking the interview?

Unknown said...

Sure! As well as all the great advice above, I'd add:
1. Think of an answer from your own experience for every, single example question listed above. Several of them are bound to come up. Write notes, use your notes during the interview.
2. Deliver your answers as a kind of story. Describe: the background to the situation, what you did, what was the outcome? Summarise by briefly reiterating what impact your actions had on the outcome.
3. Do all of the above in the active voice; avoid the passive and avoid 'we'. They need to know how effective YOU are. If you're describing a team effort or working in a group (which is a positive quality and will come up in the 'working together' questions) ensure you make clear what actions YOU took, and how YOUR input influenced the outcome.
Finally, don't be afraid to stop and ask to start an answer again if you get tongue-tied or lost giving an answer. It doesn't make you look bad, it makes you look like you know what you're doing and want to stay on-topic. Ask them to repeat the question if you need to. Good interviewers will anticipate the effects of nerves!

Hi all, I recently had a phone interview with British Council for a newly qualified teacher role. I was asked similar questions to the questions above and thanks to you all was able to prepare for it. Unfortunately I waffled a bit too much during the interview and found the interviewers a bit cold and unresponsive. I also wasn't ready for a question i was asked about teamwork. Anyway I got asked to participate in a second interview and I have no idea what to expect. Any idea what they might ask? Any help will be appreciated, the interview is tomorrow.
